QUILTS of Schenectady, Inc. is a group of avid quilters that enjoys the design, color, artistry and craft of making quilts. The Guild was formed in 1980; as of 2001, the membership has grown to over 125 active members living in Schenectady, Saratoga, Albany and surrounding towns. Some of our members are very experienced, and have taught classes, published articles and patterns. Several members have had quilts shown on local, national and international levels. And other members have joined more recently to learn, laugh and enjoy the quilting experience with others.

Monthly Meetings

QUILTS of Schenectady, Inc. meets the first Thursday of every month from September through June. Meetings are held at the Unitarian Society, 1221 Wendell Avenue, Schenectady (in between Union and Nott). Doors open at 6:30 p.m. to allow committees to set up with meetings beginning at 7:00 p.m. and ending about 9:00 p.m. Visitors are welcome. When speakers are featured during the meeting there is a $5.00 fee for non-members.

Activities

Prior to each meeting members may arrive early to mingle, browse through the extensive lending library, enter the Fat Quarter and Nametag drawings, or preview upcoming workshops. They may also visit the membership table, check out the current Block of the Month, or pose a question for the new "Sally's Solutions." Here quilters with a question or puzzling problem can have Sally (a group or experienced quilters) offer some solutions. Several smaller Friendship Groups have evolved from the large group. A member boutique has been featured prior to the holidays and Mother's Day to allow members to recycle some items they no longer need; this provides some income to purchase new books for the library.

After a short business meeting, the Program Committee introduces the evening's planned program – a speaker, a mini workshop or our annual piecemaking (and later tieing) of quilts that will be donated. The group has made and donated over 100 quilts a year to the Northeast Parent and Child Society in our "Quilts from the Heart" project. The Guild was a receipient of the JC Penney Golden Rule Award in 1991-92 for this volunteer effort.

Membership

Membership is open to anyone interested in quilting and fostering the ongoing interest in quilting. Dues of $25 in September entitles members to voting privileges, attendance at 10 meetings, access to workshops, newsletters, use of the lending library and discounts to some fabric shops. Members are expected to volunteer time related to service projects throughout the year and volunteer for the Bi-Annual Quilt Show.

Service Projects

QUILTS of Schenectady, Inc. filed as a non – profit tax exempt organization with the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance in 1998. Members annually make quilts and other donations to the Northeast Parent and Child Society in Schenectady, the YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter, Healthy Schenectady Families, The Samaritans and the Albany Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Workshops/ Trips

Workshops are offered featuring a guest speaker or one of our own members with fees to cover the cost of the workshop. Notices of the workshops are listed in the newsletter and members are given first option before the class is opened to other guilds.

Often interest is voiced by the members to visit a quilt show, museum or fabric store and based on the interest of the membership, this may be arranged for those members willing to pay to cover the expenses. Where possible we have worked with other local guilds to fill a commercial bus that allows our membership some comfort.
