"Straight from the Heart . . . Quilts for Kids"
We have an ongoing project called "Straight from the Heart . . . Quilts for Kids" making quilts for the KIDS at NORTHEAST PARENT & CHILD SOCIETY. The quilts have been very important to all of the kids, from the little ones who sleep better, protected by the love that they know has been put into our quilts, to the teens who need something of their own.
We collect completed quilts and quilt tops all year around. We dedicate our November meeting to sewing quilt tops for Northeast. We dedicate our February meeting to tying the quilts. After the February meeting we send them home for binding, then they are sent to Shirley Hedman and she puts a heart on each one, and then they go to the kids.
GENERAL GUIDELINES are: BIG-KID QUILT = 54" X 72"
LITTLE-KID QUILT = 42" X 60"
If you bring in just a quilt top please include a matching half-yard for the binding and a backing fabric. Please attach a slip of paper that tells us the exact measurements of the quilt top, and you name.
The design is completely up to you. At the present time there is a real need for quilts for teen boys. Happy Sewing.
Soldier Quilts
Members have been working to make quilts for soldiers returning home from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They are usually lap sized quilts that have small ties on two corners that can attach them to wheel chairs. The quilts made thus far have been beautiful, colorful quilts with mainly patriotic themes.
Additional Projects
While the "Quilts from the Heart" is our main community focus, members have also comtributed to the YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter, Healthy Schenectady Families, The Samaritans and the Albany Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
